Talking Fish Surfboards began as a "why-not?" operation. As a nearly life-long surfer, I love water and all sorts of craft used to convey me and my fellow humans on, in, under, over and about the water. I had owned, used, built, repaired, enjoyed, studied and loved all sorts of watercraft, especially surfboards. So, after looking at some various methods of building wooden surfboards, I decided to give it a go. Blending my woodworking and ideas about what works in the water has already been an adventure... fascinating, perplexing and satisfying. As I write this, there is a new "craft" on the stands, out by my shop, with glue curing. Shavings are everywhere. Dozens of clamps are scattered about, some actually clamping, others waiting to be pressed into service with the work to come. Different saws, rasps, sanders and handplanes are also at the ready. Two of the boards have been anxiously packed off on research and development missions, one to California, where I rode it at San Onofre and Malibu. The other, I rode in Mexico on some nice point waves outside Puerto Vallarta. After all the hours designing, thinking, cutting, gluing, thinking, sanding, gluing, head-scratching, cutting, glassing, sanding, etc., I finally got to go surfing... on a wooden board I made. Now, there seems to be no turning back. Of all the woodworking projects I have done in the past, nothing is as challenging or satisfying as building a wooden surfboard from scratch. The shapes, the materials... it is all fun! So, I feel the need to share parts of the journey with those who wish to see. Pictures of the process, seeds of inspiration, images of places which fire my imagination, and of course, some thoughts on the venture. Some boards will be for sale, as well as TalkingFish t-shirts, sweatshirts, etc. Also, there may be some other wooden items for your perusal. Please let me know what you think, or if I can build something for you.
